Thanks to a growing gig economy, the number of freelancers are on the rise.

Changing your name wouldn’t necessarily get you paid on time, but if you’re a woman, it might make your payments arrive a bit more snappily. Yes, it’s true. There’s even a gender pay gap in late payments.

Unless you’re exceptionally lucky, you won’t be bombarded on day one of freelancing by the sound of clients knocking on your front door (unless you’ve left a job and taken a whole slew of potential clients with you – a move that will make you hugely unpopular).

You may be thinking: “How can I fire a client? They’re essentially my boss!” Many freelancers are still stuck in this employee mentality where they act like whoever pays them gets final say on everything.

Freelancers, is there something missing from your invoices? Not a thing! I hear you cry. We’re organised. We track every hour worked, expense incurred, and project completed.

Another person or business providing the same service as you is competition right? Not necessarily in the freelancing world.

Everyone’s heard of the big data breaches at huge companies such as Yahoo and eBay, but perhaps not of the data breaches that happen every day to smaller companies.

So, you’ve decided to take the leap and start freelancing full time – congratulations! While it may be an exciting time, it’s also one that has the potential for failure, making it particularly daunting.

To make a living as a freelancer, you need to be hired. And to be hired, you need to inspire confidence in the people who need work completed in your sector.
